Virus update from Ed Minvielle

Below is another good update from the various viral outbreaks affecting pigeons around the world and the possible connections they may have. Ed has solid and reliable contacts in other countries that are also researching and combating various viruses. (Re-published with permission) By Ed Minvielle, Siegel Pigeons Fellow fanciers, Within the past few weeks we have been fielding an unusually large number of questions regarding very sick and dying birds in lofts around the USA mostly, but not exclusively, in the northeastern part of the US from New England all the way to Minnesota, and as far south as Tennessee. Almost all of those reporting the sick birds are show fanciers who have just returned from shows. By coincidence, there...

How are we different?

Pigeon fanciers are flooded with sales pitches in the catalogs, advertisements and well-meaning advice from friends and mentors. Winning races, shows or simply keeping your flock healthy can be daunting when faced with so many decisions and options. And honestly, it's not all bad advice. But it can be daunting to sort through it all.  I frequently get a question from potential customers that asks "What makes Kastle Pigeon different?" PMV confirmed in Kentucky, vets looking for help

The deputy veterinarian for the state of Kentucky, Bradley Keough, tells me that paramyxovirus (PMV) has been confirmed in a loft in Estill County (southeast of Lexington). The loft is under full quarantine right now. I asked about a connection to the (Louisville) National Young Bird Show and he said the man did not attend. Despite lacking a direct connection, the man in Estill County did say that he recently bought some pigeons from a gentleman at the Preston Court Days who spoke of going to the Louisville show. The LYBS occurs two weeks after Preston Court Days. No one knows who the man was. I don't know what breed of pigeons were purchased at Court Days.   The deputy vet is interested in learning...

The Pigeon Kings of Brooklyn mini-doc

Pigeon Kings of Brooklyn from Narratively on Vimeo. Here is a very nicely done mini-doc on some roof-top flyers in Brooklyn.  "Look up from the busy streets of New York City, and you might glimpse a flock of purebred pigeons swooping in circles around an abandoned tenement building in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Their aerial acrobatics are guided by their keeper, a streetwise Puerto Rican nicknamed 2Tone. On the other end of the borough, a man named Goodwin and his pal Super 13 tend their own pigeon coop and flock of 300 birds. Each man is trying to beat the other, to lure his birds away. It's about bragging rights but it's also about poetry, it's about religion. It's about finding that...
